Our August community baraza brought together a good cross-section of Mwiki residents for an open conversation about community needs, programme feedback, and ideas for the months ahead. In keeping with the transparency approach described elsewhere on this site, we wanted to share an honest recap of what was actually raised, rather than a curated summary that only reflects positive feedback.
Water Access Remains the Most Frequently Raised Concern
Unsurprisingly, given the scale of unmet need described in our earlier pieces on water access, several residents used the baraza to raise specific streets and pockets of Mwiki still lacking convenient water access, some naming locations our team hadn't yet flagged in our own mapping work. This kind of direct, specific community input is exactly what our needs assessment process depends on, and these newly flagged locations have been added to our site evaluation list.
Appreciation, With Constructive Criticism, for the Youth Programme
Several parents and young residents spoke positively about the Youth Digital Skills & Vocational Training Programme, while also raising a specific concern: that application windows sometimes close before word fully spreads through certain parts of the community, particularly among residents less active on social media. We're taking this feedback seriously and looking at expanding our announcement channels for future cohort intakes, including more consistent physical posters and direct outreach through area chiefs.
A New Concern: Safety Around Certain Water Points at Night
One resident raised a concern we hadn't previously heard directly — that a specific water point, while functional and well-used during the day, feels unsafe for women and girls to access after dark due to poor lighting nearby. This is exactly the kind of granular, lived-experience feedback that a broader survey or map alone might miss, and we're now looking into low-cost lighting or scheduling adjustments that could address this specific safety concern.
Requests for More Frequent Community Updates
A few residents asked whether we could share updates on our programmes' progress more frequently and more accessibly, beyond our website and social media, which not every resident actively follows. We're considering more regular printed or verbally shared updates at future barazas as a direct response to this feedback.
Why We Publish These Recaps at All
We could simply act on this feedback internally without publishing a public recap, but we believe residents who took the time to attend and speak up deserve to see that their input was heard and is being acted upon, even where the specific action taken is still preliminary. Publishing these recaps is also a form of accountability to the wider community who couldn't attend in person, giving them visibility into what their neighbours raised and how it's shaping our work.

Turning Feedback Into Tracked Action Items
Every concern raised at this baraza has been logged internally as a specific action item with an assigned team member responsible for following up, rather than left as a general impression from the meeting. We believe this level of concrete follow-through, more than the meeting itself, is what determines whether a community baraza genuinely changes anything or simply becomes a recurring but ultimately symbolic exercise.
We also want to acknowledge the residents whose concerns didn't make it into this particular recap, either because they were raised informally after the main session or because they related to matters outside our current organisational capacity to address directly. We're still tracking this feedback internally, even where it doesn't lead to an immediate, visible action, because understanding the full range of community concerns, addressable or not right now, shapes our longer-term thinking about where One Vision CBO's work might need to expand in the future.
