Healthcare Is a Right, Not a Privilege
For many families in Mwiki Sub-Location, the cost of a single hospital visit is enough to push a household into debt. Long distances to public health facilities, limited transport money, and fear of cost cause many residents to delay or forego medical care entirely — until conditions become life-threatening. One Vision CBO's Community Health Outreach Programme is designed to eliminate these barriers by bringing professional, compassionate healthcare directly into the community.
What Our Medical Camps Offer
Each medical camp is staffed by qualified volunteer doctors, nurses, clinical officers, and community health volunteers (CHVs) in partnership with Kasarani Sub-County Health Department. Services provided entirely free of charge include:
- General Consultation & Treatment: Diagnosis and treatment of common conditions including malaria, respiratory infections, hypertension, and diabetes screening.
- Maternal & Child Health: Antenatal care, child immunisation catch-up, nutrition screening for under-5s, and family planning counselling.
- HIV Testing & Counselling (HTC): Voluntary, confidential HIV testing with immediate linkage to ART services for those who test positive.
- TB Screening & Referral: Cough screening, sputum sample collection, and facilitated referral to the nearest TB treatment centre.
- Eye Care & Vision Testing: Basic vision tests with free reading glasses distributed to adults with presbyopia — a common and debilitating condition among older community members.
- Dental Screening: Basic oral health education and screening, with referrals for extraction and other procedures.
- Mental Health First Aid: Awareness sessions and individual referrals to mental health professionals, addressing the largely hidden burden of depression and anxiety in our community.
Impact Achieved
Our inaugural medical camp held in February 2026 at Mwiki Primary School grounds served 312 patients in a single day — exceeding our target of 200 by 56%. Of those screened, 47 were referred for further specialist care, 89 received free reading glasses, and 34 received HIV testing (all results negative). Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many stating it was their first medical check-up in over three years.
Upcoming Camps
We run health camps on a quarterly basis. Our next camp is scheduled for September 2026 with a focus on maternal health and child nutrition. We are also piloting a door-to-door health screening programme targeting bedridden elderly residents who cannot travel to camp venues.
