Transforming Youth Potential into Economic Power
Unemployment among youth in Mwiki Sub-Location, Kasarani remains one of the most pressing challenges facing our community. One Vision CBO's Youth Digital Skills & Vocational Training Programme was established with a clear mandate: to break the cycle of dependency by equipping young men and women with the practical, market-ready skills they need to thrive in today's economy.
Who This Programme Serves
The programme targets youth aged 18 to 35 years living within Mwiki Sub-Location and the broader Kasarani constituency. Priority is given to school leavers who could not access university education, young mothers seeking economic empowerment, and youth from households below the poverty line. Since inception, we have enrolled over 120 young people across two cohorts, with a third cohort planned for the second quarter of 2026.
What We Teach
Our curriculum is designed in direct consultation with local employers, digital entrepreneurs, and government technical advisors to ensure every skill taught is immediately employable. Training modules include:
- Computer Literacy & Microsoft Office: Foundational digital skills every employer expects, from spreadsheets to professional document preparation.
- Graphic Design (Canva & Adobe): Practical design skills for branding, social media, and freelance opportunities.
- Digital Marketing & Social Media Management: How to grow businesses online, run paid campaigns, and manage brand presence.
- Mobile Phone Repair & Electronics: A high-demand vocational trade with strong earning potential in Nairobi's informal economy.
- Tailoring & Fashion Design: Supporting the fast-growing textile and fashion sector with hands-on sewing and garment production skills.
- Basic Financial Literacy & Business Planning: Teaching youth how to manage income, save, access credit, and start micro-enterprises.
Programme Outcomes So Far
Of the 120 youth trained in our first two cohorts, 78 are now employed or self-employed. Fourteen graduates have launched small businesses including a graphic design studio, two tailoring shops, and a mobile repair kiosk operating within Mwiki market. Several others have secured remote freelance contracts through platforms like Upwork and Fiverr, earning in foreign currency from within their own homes.
Partnerships Driving Impact
This programme is made possible through collaborations with Kasarani Sub-County Government, local business owners who provide mentorship, and digital training partners who supply laptops and equipment. We are actively seeking additional partners to sponsor full scholarships for youth who cannot afford the nominal registration fee.
