Mwiki Environmental Sustainability & Green Spaces Project

A Cleaner Mwiki is Everyone's Responsibility

Rapid urban growth in Kasarani has come at an environmental cost. Illegal dumpsites, blocked drainage channels, vanishing green spaces, and uncollected solid waste have become visible features of parts of Mwiki Sub-Location. These are not just eyesores — they are public health hazards that cause flooding during rains, breed disease vectors, and degrade the dignity of our neighbourhood. One Vision CBO's Environmental Sustainability Project is our pledge to leave Mwiki greener, cleaner, and healthier than we found it.

Key Activities Under This Project

1. Tree Planting Campaign

We have committed to planting 1,000 trees across Mwiki by the end of 2026. Trees are being planted along footpaths, in school compounds, at health facilities, and in open spaces. Species selected are a mix of indigenous trees for biodiversity, fruit trees for household nutrition, and shade trees for community gathering spaces. In our first planting drive in April 2026, 320 seedlings were planted with a survival rate of 91% at three-month review.

2. Illegal Dumpsite Clearance

Working with Kasarani Sub-County sanitation teams and youth volunteers, we have cleared five illegal dumpsites across Mwiki since January 2026 — removing an estimated 40 tonnes of solid waste. Cleared sites are being converted into small community gardens or fenced green areas to prevent re-dumping.

3. Solid Waste Management Awareness

Monthly community clean-ups are held on the last Saturday of each month, bringing together residents, school children, and businesses to collectively clean streets, markets, and drainage channels. We distribute waste collection bags, educate on composting organic waste, and link households to the nearest formal waste collection service.

4. School Environment Clubs

We have established Green Clubs in three primary schools in Mwiki, training young environmental champions who lead clean-up activities, tree-watering rosters, and environmental awareness campaigns among their peers and families.

Why This Matters for Mwiki

A cleaner environment directly translates to better health outcomes (fewer mosquito-breeding sites, less respiratory disease from burning waste), improved property values, and a greater sense of community pride. When people are proud of where they live, they take better care of it — creating a virtuous cycle of environmental stewardship that benefits current and future generations.
