Transparency here isn't just good practice — it's the foundation of the trust a community-based organisation like One Vision CBO depends on to keep operating and growing. Here's a straightforward look at how donations are handled.
Donations Are Directed Toward Specific Programmes
Where possible, we encourage donors to direct their contribution toward a specific programme area — clean water, youth training, health outreach, women's economic empowerment, or environmental sustainability — rather than only giving to a general fund. This makes it easier for us to report back precisely on how a specific contribution was used, and gives donors a clearer, more concrete picture of their impact.
How Funds Are Tracked Internally
As a registered community-based organisation under Kenyan law (Reg. No. DSD/47/280/02/146474), we maintain internal financial records for every programme, tracking expenditure against the specific activities it was intended for — materials for a water point, training materials for a youth cohort, medical supplies for an outreach camp. This internal discipline is essential both for our own accountability and for meeting the reporting standards expected of registered CBOs.
What Donors Can Expect in Return
Depending on the size and nature of a contribution, donors can expect acknowledgement of their gift, updates on the specific programme or project their donation supported, and for larger institutional donors, more detailed reporting on outcomes and expenditure. We'd rather under-promise and consistently deliver honest updates than over-promise reporting we can't realistically sustain given our current size.

It's easy to assume only large donations move the needle, but the reality for an organisation our size is that consistent, smaller contributions — from individuals, small local businesses, and community members themselves — often provide the steady, predictable funding base that lets us plan and commit to ongoing programme costs, while larger one-off gifts fund specific new initiatives or expansions.
Questions Every Donor Should Feel Comfortable Asking
We'd encourage any prospective donor, to us or any other organisation, to feel entirely comfortable asking direct questions before giving: what percentage of a donation goes toward direct programme costs versus administrative overhead, how outcomes are measured and reported, and what happens if a specific funded activity doesn't proceed as planned. An organisation unwilling or unable to answer these questions clearly is itself useful information for a donor to weigh.
We try to answer these questions as directly and specifically as our current size and systems allow, while being honest where our reporting systems are still developing — a young, growing CBO's financial reporting infrastructure is naturally less sophisticated than that of a large, established international NGO, and we'd rather be upfront about that than overstate our current capacity.
Why We Prefer Ongoing Relationships Over One-Time Gifts
While every donation, large or small, genuinely matters, we've found that donors who develop an ongoing relationship with our work — following updates, occasionally visiting a project site, asking follow-up questions about outcomes — tend to give not just more consistently, but more confidently, because they've built a direct, informed understanding of how their contribution translates into real activity on the ground.
We actively encourage this kind of ongoing engagement rather than treating a donation purely as a one-time transaction, because it strengthens the mutual accountability that sits at the heart of a healthy donor relationship.
Small Gifts Are Always Welcome
If a large donation isn't within your means right now, please don't let that stop you from giving what you can. Consistent small contributions from many community members have historically formed a meaningful and reliable part of our funding base, and every gift, regardless of size, is tracked and used with the same care and accountability described above.
Ultimately, the relationship between a donor and an organisation like ours works best when it's built on this kind of mutual honesty — clear expectations on both sides, realistic reporting, and a shared understanding that community development work is genuinely difficult, non-linear, and worth supporting anyway because the alternative, doing nothing, leaves the same needs entirely unaddressed.
