The queue began forming before sunrise. By 7:00 AM — a full hour before the medical camp was scheduled to open — over 80 people had already lined up at the gates of Mwiki Primary School, clutching referral slips, old prescription bottles, and the quiet hope that today would be different.
One Vision CBO's inaugural Community Health Outreach Camp, held on February 22nd, 2026, ultimately served 312 patients — 56% above our projected target of 200 — a number that speaks louder than any speech about the healthcare gap in Mwiki Sub-Location.
A Full Day of Free Healthcare
Eighteen volunteer medical professionals — including three doctors, seven nurses, two clinical officers, a dentist, an optometrist, and five community health volunteers — worked from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM without stopping. Services provided entirely free of charge included:
- General consultation and treatment for 187 patients with conditions ranging from hypertension and malaria to respiratory infections and musculoskeletal pain
- HIV testing and counselling for 34 patients, with all results returned confidentially within the hour
- Vision testing and free reading glasses distribution — 89 adults received reading glasses, many expressing they had lived with blurred vision for years without ever accessing correction
- Child immunisation catch-up for 28 children whose vaccination schedules had fallen behind
- Dental screening for 41 patients, with 12 referred for tooth extractions at Kasarani Sub-County Hospital
- Maternal health consultations for 19 expectant and recently delivered mothers
Beyond Numbers — Real Stories of Relief
Among those who attended was Mama Josephine, a 67-year-old grandmother who had not seen a doctor in four years due to cost. She was diagnosed with high blood pressure and given a one-month supply of antihypertensive medication at no charge, along with a referral to Kasarani Sub-County Hospital for ongoing monitoring. "I didn't know my pressure was that high. I thought my headaches were from stress. This camp may have saved my life," she said quietly as she left the consultation tent.
Mental Health: The Silent Crisis
For the first time in Mwiki, a community health initiative dedicated a station to mental health first aid. A trained counsellor offered confidential one-on-one sessions, and a group awareness session on depression, anxiety, and grief drew over 40 attendees — significantly more than anticipated. The demand confirmed what many already suspected: mental health is a major, largely invisible burden in our community that deserves urgent, sustained attention.

Our next Community Health Outreach Camp is scheduled for September 2026, with a special focus on maternal and child health, nutrition screening, and eye care.
