Most residents only interact with a community water point at the moment they turn the tap and fill a jerrican. What happens before that moment — the drilling, testing, piping, and community organising — is invisible but critical. Understanding it helps explain why some water projects fail within months while others serve a neighbourhood reliably for years, and it's the standard One Vision CBO holds itself to on every site.

Hydrogeological Assessment Comes First

Not every plot of land sits above a viable aquifer, and drilling blind is both expensive and risky. Before committing to a borehole site, a hydrogeological survey estimates groundwater depth, likely yield, and water quality risk factors specific to that location. Skipping this step is how projects end up with a borehole that either runs dry within a year or produces water too saline or contaminated to be usable without expensive treatment.

Drilling and Casing

Once a site is confirmed, drilling proceeds with proper casing to prevent surface contaminants from seeping into the water column — a detail that's invisible once the work is finished but that determines the long-term safety of the source. Cutting corners here is one of the most common causes of boreholes that test clean at commissioning but become contaminated within a year or two.

Pump Selection and Solar Power

Where feasible, our team prioritises solar-powered pumping systems over diesel generators. Distribution and the Final Stretch to Households

A productive borehole is only useful if the water actually reaches people conveniently. Depending on the terrain and budget, this can mean a single central tap, or a small network of standpipes distributed across a neighbourhood to reduce walking distance. Wherever possible, we design distribution to serve the households that are currently walking the furthest, rather than defaulting to whichever location is easiest to build at.

Maintenance: The Part That Determines Everything

Every site is handed over with a trained local committee, a basic spare-parts kit, and a direct line to our team for issues beyond local capacity. This is the difference between a water point that serves a community for a season and one that serves it for a decade.

Water Quality Testing Doesn't Stop at Commissioning

A water source that tests clean on the day it opens can become contaminated months or years later — through pipe damage, cross-contamination near a pit latrine dug too close afterward, or simply ageing infrastructure. This is why our approach includes periodic re-testing of active water points, not just a single test at commissioning, catching quality problems before they translate into a cluster of illness in the community relying on that source.

Community water user committees are trained to recognise basic warning signs between formal tests too — unusual colour, smell, or taste in the water, or a spike in reported stomach illness among users of a particular point — and to flag these immediately rather than waiting for the next scheduled test cycle.

The Real Timeline From Survey to Working Tap

Residents sometimes understandably ask why a promised water point takes months rather than weeks to materialise. The honest answer is that each stage — survey, contractor procurement, drilling or rehabilitation, quality testing, distribution network installation, and committee formation and training — has its own realistic timeline, and skipping or rushing any one of them is precisely how projects elsewhere have failed within their first year.

We'd rather set realistic expectations from the outset and deliver a water point that lasts, than promise an unrealistically fast timeline and then either miss it or cut corners to meet it.

We try to share basic technical details about each water point — approximate depth, pump type, commissioning date — on request to residents and water user committees, not because most residents need this level of detail day to day, but because a small number of technically curious community members having access to this information has, more than once, helped identify a developing problem early through informed observation.
