Preparing for the December Giving Season: How One Vision CBO Plans Ahead

September 10, 2026

December has traditionally been a season of heightened generosity for many organisations, as individuals and businesses reflect on the closing year and consider year-end giving. While that season is still a few months away, we believe genuine planning starts early, and this piece shares an honest look at how we're thinking about the coming December giving season now, in September.

Why Plan This Far Ahead

A surge of December donations arriving with no clear plan for how to deploy them responsibly can be almost as challenging as insufficient funding — money that sits unused while a considered plan is developed represents a missed opportunity for the community waiting on that support. Planning now, months ahead, lets us identify specific, ready-to-fund opportunities across our five programmes, so that December giving translates into action as quickly and responsibly as possible once it arrives.

Identifying Ready-to-Fund Opportunities Now

Across our programmes, we're currently cataloguing specific, well-defined funding opportunities that could be activated quickly with December giving — a specific water point site already surveyed and ready for the drilling stage, a planned Youth Digital Skills cohort that could be expanded with additional funding, and equipment needs for our Community Health Outreach camps that have been identified but not yet funded.

Having this specific list ready means a December donor isn't asked to give to a vague general appeal, but can choose to fund something concrete and well-understood, consistent with the transparency principles we've written about elsewhere on this site.

Learning From How Other Organisations Approach This Season

We've looked at how established organisations, both locally and internationally, structure their year-end giving campaigns, drawing lessons on clear, specific asks rather than vague appeals, and on realistic reporting timelines for how donations will actually be used once received — lessons we're incorporating into our own, more modest December planning as a young, growing organisation.

What This Means for You as a Potential December Donor

If you're already thinking about year-end giving, even this far ahead, we'd welcome an early conversation about which of our specific, ready-to-fund opportunities might align with what you're hoping to support. Early conversations like this help us plan our own December outreach more thoughtfully, matched to real donor interest rather than guesswork.

Balancing Planning With Flexibility

While planning this far ahead is valuable, we're also conscious of staying genuinely flexible to needs that may emerge closer to December itself — an urgent water point repair, an unexpected medical camp equipment need — that couldn't have been anticipated back in September. Our approach is to maintain a core list of ready-to-fund opportunities while leaving room to incorporate more urgent, time-sensitive needs as they arise, rather than treating our current planning as a rigid, unchangeable list.

An Early Invitation

If reading this has you thinking ahead to your own December giving plans, however early that might feel right now in September, we'd genuinely welcome an early conversation. Early planning on both sides tends to produce more thoughtful, better-matched giving once December actually arrives.

What This Planning Says About Our Approach More Broadly

This kind of forward planning, months ahead of an actual funding season, reflects how we try to approach every aspect of our work — not reactively scrambling once a need or opportunity arrives, but thinking ahead deliberately so that when generosity or opportunity does arrive, we're genuinely ready to use it well rather than figuring out a plan under time pressure.

We're also mindful that not every donor's giving decision follows a calendar planned months in advance, and spontaneous, unplanned generosity remains just as welcome and valuable as a carefully considered December contribution. This early planning exists to make sure we're ready for whatever combination of planned and spontaneous giving actually arrives, not to suggest that giving needs to be scheduled or deliberated extensively to be meaningful.

To start an early conversation about December giving, or to learn more about specific funding opportunities across our programmes, reach us at info@onevisioncbo.site or +254 798 200890. We look forward to sharing our finalised December giving priorities as the season draws closer, and to putting whatever generosity arrives to thoughtful, well-planned use. Thank you for considering One Vision CBO as part of your own year-end giving plans, whenever and however they come together. Whatever role you play in our work — resident, volunteer, or donor — we hope you'll consider being part of this planning conversation with us as the season approaches, however far off it may currently feel from where we stand today in September. We're genuinely energised by the possibilities this coming giving season holds, and we can't wait to share how it unfolds once December finally arrives. If you have questions about any of the specific funding opportunities mentioned in this piece, our team is happy to walk through the details with you at any time between now and December.
