One Vision CBO doesn't currently run a standalone formal education programme, but children's educational outcomes in Mwiki are affected, directly and indirectly, by nearly every programme we do run. This piece looks at the often-overlooked ways community development work outside a classroom shapes what happens inside one.
Health and School Attendance Are Directly Linked
A child battling waterborne illness, or one whose vision problems have never been screened, faces real barriers to consistent school attendance and classroom performance that have nothing to do with academic ability. Our Community Health Outreach & Free Medical Camps, and the broader Clean Water Access Initiative, both contribute directly to the basic physical conditions a child needs to attend school consistently and concentrate once there.
Household Income Stability Affects School Continuity
School fees, uniforms, and basic supplies remain a real barrier for many Mwiki households, and income instability is often the deciding factor in whether a child's education continues without interruption. Programmes like Women's Economic Empowerment & Table Banking Groups, by helping households build more stable, diversified income, indirectly support the household stability that keeps children in school through difficult stretches.
Older Siblings as Role Models Through Our Youth Programme
Many participants in our Youth Digital Skills & Vocational Training Programme are older siblings in households with younger, school-going children. When an older sibling visibly builds a marketable skill and begins earning, it shifts a younger child's own sense of what's possible for their future — a subtle but real influence on aspiration and motivation that shapes how seriously a child engages with their own education.
A Cleaner, Greener Environment Supports Learning Too
Environmental factors matter more to learning than they're often given credit for — a school environment with reliable drainage, less exposure to waste-related illness, and some green, shaded outdoor space contributes to a more conducive learning environment than one without these basics. Our Mwiki Environmental Sustainability & Green Spaces Project, and our engagement with schools during tree-planting days, touches this dimension directly.
Conversations With Local Schools
We maintain informal but ongoing relationships with several schools in and around Mwiki, primarily through our environmental programme's tree-planting days and occasional health screening collaboration, and these relationships have surfaced useful insight into challenges affecting attendance and performance that aren't always visible from outside a classroom — issues like inconsistent access to school lunch for some families, or the specific weeks each term when attendance dips due to fee payment deadlines.
These insights increasingly inform how we think about timing and framing our other programmes — for instance, timing certain health outreach activities to align with school terms when possible, so that screening and referral can happen before a health issue has already caused extended absence.
A Longer-Term Ambition Worth Naming Honestly
We're occasionally asked whether One Vision CBO plans to launch a dedicated education programme — tutoring support, a scholarship fund, or similar — in the future. It's a genuine ambition we've discussed internally, but one we're deliberately not rushing into before we're confident we can deliver it well, consistent with the same feasibility discipline described in our piece on how we choose projects.
For now, we believe the most honest and responsible path is continuing to strengthen the indirect educational benefits of our existing programmes, while treating a dedicated education initiative as a genuine possibility for the future rather than a premature announcement made before we have the capacity to follow through responsibly.
Parents and Guardians Are Welcome to Reach Out
If you're a parent or guardian who has observed a specific pattern affecting your child's education that you believe our programmes could indirectly help address, we'd welcome hearing about it directly. These direct conversations often surface practical connections between our existing programmes and a family's specific situation that we wouldn't otherwise have identified.
Education outcomes are shaped by far more than what happens inside a classroom, and we believe an honest accounting of our indirect contributions here — through health, economic stability, and environmental conditions — is more useful to residents than an overstated claim of educational impact we haven't yet earned through a dedicated programme.
Children growing up in Mwiki today are, in a very real sense, the reason every one of our current programmes exists in the first place — a healthier, more economically stable, more environmentally sound Mwiki is ultimately the community we hope today's children inherit and continue building on as they grow into adulthood themselves.
While we don't run a formal in-classroom education programme today, we recognise the connection between our work and children's educational outcomes clearly, and it's a factor in how we plan future programming.
