Since our official registration in October 2025, One Vision CBO has moved from a founding idea to five active community programmes reaching hundreds of Mwiki residents. As we mark this first stretch of our journey, it feels worth pausing to reflect honestly — on what's gone well, what's been harder than expected, and what comes next.
From Idea to Registered Organisation
Every registered CBO starts as an idea shared among a small group of people who see a gap and decide to act on it rather than wait for someone else to. Our founding members brought together a shared frustration with unmet needs in Mwiki — unreliable water access, limited youth opportunity, gaps in basic healthcare access — and channelled that frustration into the structured, accountable form of a registered community-based organisation.
Building Five Programmes From Scratch
Launching the Clean Water Access Initiative, the Youth Digital Skills & Vocational Training Programme, Community Health Outreach & Free Medical Camps, Women's Economic Empowerment & Table Banking Groups, and the Mwiki Environmental Sustainability & Green Spaces Project within our first year was ambitious, and not every programme moved at the same pace. Some, like the Monthly Community Clean-Up, found their rhythm almost immediately. Others required more trial, adjustment, and honest conversation with residents before finding an approach that genuinely worked.
What We've Learned
Perhaps the clearest lesson from our first year is that community trust is built slowly and can't be rushed with good intentions alone. Programmes that involved residents deeply from the earliest planning stages — like our water user committee model — have proven more resilient than approaches that moved faster but left residents feeling like recipients rather than partners in the work.
What's Next
Looking ahead, our focus is on deepening the reach and reliability of our existing five programmes before expanding into new areas — more water points across Mwiki, additional youth training cohorts, and continued growth of our table banking network. We're also exploring the recycling and green livelihoods concept described elsewhere on our News page, as a potential sixth programme area if a strong pilot partnership can be secured.
Being Honest About What Didn't Go as Planned
Not every ambition from our founding year materialised on the timeline we'd hoped. Some planned partnerships took far longer to formalise than expected, and at least one planned project component was quietly shelved after community feedback suggested it wasn't actually the priority we'd assumed it would be. We think it's important to name these adjustments honestly rather than presenting our first year as a smooth, uninterrupted success story, because the willingness to adjust based on real feedback is itself one of the more important lessons we're carrying forward.
These recalibrations, uncomfortable as they sometimes were in the moment, ultimately shaped a stronger, more community-responsive set of programmes than our original founding plan would have produced on its own.
Thanking the People Who Made the First Year Possible
None of this first year's progress would have been possible without the residents who trusted a newly registered, unproven organisation enough to attend our first community consultations, the volunteers who showed up to our very first, modestly attended clean-up day, and the early partners willing to fund an organisation with no lengthy track record yet to point to.
That early trust, extended before we had much to show for ourselves beyond genuine intent, is something we're conscious of every time we make a decision about how to use a donation or design a new programme — it's a trust we're determined to keep earning, not something we consider permanently secured.

Whatever role you might play — resident, volunteer, donor, or partner — there's a place for you in what comes next. Our second year's plans build directly on the lessons of the first, and we'd genuinely welcome your involvement in shaping how they unfold.
A first year is, by definition, just a beginning, and we're conscious that the real test of an organisation like ours lies not in how ambitiously it starts, but in how honestly and consistently it continues to show up for the community it serves, year after year, adjusting as it learns rather than repeating the same approach regardless of what the evidence suggests.
Looking back at where we started — a small group of founders with a shared conviction that Mwiki deserved more responsive, locally rooted support than it was currently receiving — the distance travelled in a single year feels genuinely significant, even as we remain clear-eyed about how much further there is still to go before we're serving this community as fully and effectively as we ultimately hope to.
